Collection: Chateau MUSAR - Bordeaux meets Arabian nights
Château Musar was established by Gaston Hochar in 1930 and is without doubt Lebanon's top wine estate.
Though wines have been created and enjoyed in the region for 6000 years, few properties have consistently produced such high quality wines in the face of adversity and war. It stands just 15 kilometres north of Beirut, which was ravaged by civil war from 1975 to 1990. Incredibly, during that time only two vintages (1976 and 1984) were missed, largely thanks to the sheer will and determination of one man - Serge Hochar, son of Gaston Hochar. Named Decanter's first Man of the Year in 1984, his foresight to sell their wines internationally, together with his eloquent championing has won him many fans the world over with some calling it 'Lafite of Lebanon'.
It is also the first estate Lebanon to achieve organic certifications for its vineyards in 2006. It is thought these ancient soils give Musar its seductive exotic aromas and the edge of warm spice to the succulent layers of ripe plum, cherry and blackcurrant.
The most famous wine, Chateau Musar red is a varying blend of old vines, low yielding Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Cinsault. Serge Hochar states that the Cabernet Sauvignon provides "the bones and the skeleton to the wine, the Carignan the flesh and muscle and the Cinsault the silky smooth finesse". Fermentation is in concrete, before the wine spends a year in the vat, then a year or so in French Nevers oak. It's blended in the third year, put back into vat and bottled, and cellared for up to six or seven years before release. There is no fining, minimum filtration and sulphites are kept very low. The whole approach is low-interventionist and the result gives time for each variety to unfold its own character. The wines are truly unique and extremely long-lived, with the best examples lasting for 20-30 years.
