A benchmark single-vineyard Barolo from the celebrated Ginestra cru in Monforte d’Alba, Ciabot Mentin is one of Domenico Clerico’s most important wines. The estate describes it as the first “flag” Domenico planted in Ginestra and one of the wines that helped shape the history of the Barolo denomination over the last 30 years. The plot sits in Monforte d’Alba within the Ginestra MGA, with Nebbiolo vines planted in 1978, at around 390–420m altitude, on limestone-rich Tortonian marl soils. The 2021 vintage is deep, structured and highly refined, showing classic Nebbiolo notes of red cherry, dark cherry, rose petal, violet, liquorice, tobacco, sweet spice, dried herbs, orange peel, tar and mineral earthiness. The palate is powerful yet polished, with concentrated fruit, firm but beautifully integrated tannins, bright acidity and impressive length. Compared with the warmer 2022, the 2021 carries more tension, definition and ageing potential — a serious Barolo for collectors and Nebbiolo lovers. Excellent with tajarin with white truffle, agnolotti del plin, porcini risotto, braised beef, osso buco, roast lamb, duck, venison, wagyu, grilled ribeye, veal, game meats, aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, Castelmagno and other mature hard cheeses.
