Previously known as River Stones, this rare, single-parcel Malbec comes from just 2.6 hectares of the Adrianna Vineyard in Gualtallary, at 1,366 metres above sea level. The parcel occupies an ancient riverbed covered with oval white stones coated in calcium carbonate. These stones provide exceptional drainage while absorbing daytime heat and moderating the vineyard’s cold nights.
The cooler 2019 vintage particularly suited this north-facing parcel, producing a remarkable combination of power, freshness and elegance. Made from 100% Malbec with 50% whole clusters, it was fermented using wild yeasts and matured for 20 months in one- and two-year-old French oak. Catena Zapata
Intensely perfumed with blackberry, black cherry, violets and lavender, complemented by black olive, wet stone, pepper and subtle oak spice. Full and concentrated on the palate, yet exceptionally precise and graceful. Abundant but finely integrated tannins create a chalky, mineral texture, while vibrant acidity carries the dark fruit through a long, focused and savoury finish. Among Catena’s Adrianna Malbecs, River is arguably the most mineral and refined—more linear than Fortuna Terrae and less muscular than Mundus Bacillus Terrae. Excellent with grilled ribeye, roast lamb, venison, beef tenderloin, charcoal-grilled short ribs or duck breast. Its mineral freshness also suits mushroom and truffle dishes without overly sweet sauces.
This is entering its drinking window but remains youthful. Enjoy from 2026 to approximately 2045, with its most harmonious phase likely beginning around 2028. If opening now, decant for two hours and serve at approximately 16–18°C.
