A masterpiece of traditional Rioja and released only in exceptional vintages, the 2011 “890” Selección Especial is profoundly complex and impeccably refined. The nose is deeply layered with aromas of dried cherry, blackberry compote and fig, interwoven with notes of cedar, cigar box, vanilla, leather, truffle and sweet spice from extended ageing in American oak. On the palate, it is full-bodied yet remarkably silky, with ultra-fine, resolved tannins and vibrant acidity carrying flavours of dark and red fruits, tobacco, balsamic, cocoa and earthy undertones through to an exceptionally long, savoury and harmonious finish. Powerful yet poised, this is a wine of great pedigree and longevity, drinking beautifully now but capable of further evolution. Ideal with roast lamb, slow-braised beef, game dishes, Iberico pork or aged hard cheeses, where its depth, savoury complexity and elegance elevate rich, umami-driven flavours.
