GAJA and Barbaresco are synonymous and their flagship wine ‘Gaja Barbaresco’ is the most profound wine of this designation. It is a producer that is widely credited with transforming not just the image and international reputation of its native Piedmont region, but of Italy as a whole. It was founded in 1859 and is now managed by Gaja Gaja - 5th generation and daughter of Angelo Gaja. 

Angelo Gaja is probably the most well-known Italian vineyard owner internationally. No other winemaker has received the "TreBicchieri" - the highest honour awarded by the Italian wine guide Gambero Rosso - on so many occasions as he has. He has been repeatedly chosen as "Man of the Year" by the magazines Decanter and Wine Spectator.
Widely regarded as one of Italy's leading modernizers – the counterpoint to Bruno Giacosa, Barbaresco's other superstar. Angelo has planted French grapes, such as Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Viognier, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as employing techniques that were initially more typical of Bordeaux or California than Piedmont. Yet he also perpetuated traditions of favouring long macerations and the use of new oak complemented by that of larger Slavonian botti.
The winery is on impressive form at the moment, making very successful and highly sorted after  Barbaresco and Barolo Crus together with top quality range of range of wines from its extensive vineyards.
