Made from Domenico Clerico’s best plots around the commune. The estate describes this wine as a collection of its finest Monforte d’Alba parcels and “the purest representation” of the character of Monforte, with Nebbiolo planted between 1968 and 2005 on limestone-rich Tortonian marl soils.
The 2020 vintage is expressive and finely structured, showing red cherry, plum, cranberry, wild berries, rose, violet, blood orange, liquorice, sweet spice, tobacco, clove, graphite and a touch of tar. The palate is medium to full-bodied, with juicy red fruit, bright acidity, fine freshness and firm yet polished Nebbiolo tannins. Compared with the more powerful single-vineyard Clerico Barolos, this Monforte bottling is slightly more approachable, but still carries serious Barolo depth, grip and ageing potential.
