Malbec Argentino celebrates the grape’s journey from medieval France, through its near disappearance following phylloxera, to its rebirh in Argentina. The dramatic label depicts this history through four female figures, ending with Adrianna Catena representing the variety’s flourishing new life in Mendoza.
The 2022 combines old-vine Malbec from the warmer Angélica Vineyard in Lunlunta and the higher, cooler Nicasia Vineyard in Paraje Altamira. Derived from the family’s pre-phylloxera massal selection, the wine incorporates some whole clusters and is matured in French oak and foudres.
Deep violet in colour, with expressive aromas of blackberry, blueberry, cassis and violets, complemented by white pepper, dark chocolate, cigar box and subtle savoury spice. Rich and concentrated on the palate, yet impressively polished, with juicy black fruit, fine-grained tannins and a mineral, lightly saline undertone. The finish is powerful, spicy and exceptionally persistent. Excellent with grilled ribeye, beef tenderloin, lamb chops, venison, slow-roasted beef or barbecued short ribs. It also pairs well with roast mushrooms, aged Manchego and mature Gouda.
Already approachable for its plush fruit and refined tannins, but it will benefit from further bottle development. Drink from 2026 to approximately 2038. If serving now, decant for 60–90 minutes and serve at around 16–18°C.
