"This is the 162nd creation of Krug Grande Cuvé is based on the 2006 vintage. The oldest wine is from 1990 and the youngest 2006, with 142 wines from 11 vintages. Reserve wines lend structure and depth to this season's harvest, which seemed to be somewhat too homogeneous. It is this year's wines of many plots from the villages of Mesnil-sur-Oger, Avize and Villers Mamery which proved the shine and minerality to the blend. 44% Pinot Noir, 35% Chardonnay, 21% Pinot Meunier. Dosage 6 g/l.
Tasted blind. Rich nose, really quite creamy and opulent on the nose. Very slight edge of decay, but in a nice way. A tad soft; relatively low acid. Slightly lazy bead. Medium persistence."
"As I reported when it was released, Krug's 2006 Brut is clearly one of the vintage's highlights. Offering up aromas of dried fruits, pear, freshly baked bread, caramelized apples, honeycomb and toasted sourdough, it's full-bodied, deep and layered, with superb concentration, racy acids and an impressively tightly wound profile for this demonstrative vintage. I observed last year that this is surprisingly reserved for the vintage, and if anything, that quality is even more in evidence today. While many 2006 Champagnes are likely to be at their best in their demonstrative youth, this is one wine unquestionably built for the long haul."
