This is the first vintage fermented in open oak vat and matured in foudre, and it might have changed its personality a bit. This is from a south-facing vineyard, the earliest to be harvested of the three reds. The vineyard is planted with young vines on very poor granite soils, and the plants suffer in the summer, perhaps more in line with the reds from Ribeira Sacra across the river than the other reds, with an austere sensation and a Mediterranean twist, perhaps marked by the character of the vintage with notes of rockrose, soy sauce and iodine. The vineyard is slowly finding its balance, and I found more character here—and even more elegance and finesse—than in 2014. 2,625 bottles were filled in May 2016."

93+ points - Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

"A tangy and intense red with crushed raspberries and white pepper and some slate undertones. The 2.75 hectares of this young south-facing vineyard produced 2,635 bottles of the 2016 Falcoeira A Capilla, always a richer wine compared with its siblings. It's a historical vineyard that was abandoned, but its almost 100 ancient terraces were replanted with a field blend of Mencía, Merenzao, Sousón, Godello, Garnacha...and other grapes that would have been there in the past. Winemaking is simple, the grapes fermented in small wooden and stainless steel tanks, and the wine aged in French oak foudres. 2016 seems like a great vintage for the reds here, and Falcoeira kept the freshness and poise within its riper character. The palate is delineated and with a marked stony feeling to it. With time in the glass, the wine became finer and more elegant, and that extra touch of ripeness seemed to disappear. This is an old-vine field blend of approximately 85% Tempranillo and the rest small portions of different grapes, red and white (Valenciano, Navarro or Albillo), from three different plots that are quite different from each other, in three different villages. It fermented in oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in French barriques for 15 to 18 months. This unusual year provided one of the best years of Matallana, a backward, serious, harmonious and shy wine, with perfectly integrated oak and refined, chalky tannins that provide a limestone minerality that is a mouthfeel, a texture rather than a flavor. There is a flinty sensation that develops with time in the glass. Taking into consideration the difference of age, it reminded me of the 2001, like an updated version of it. Tasting it next to the Pago la Jara from Toro from the same year, the personality of each was very clear, reflecting what's on the label, a place and a year, both through old-vine Tempranillo. The grapes are sourced from up to nine hectares of vines on slate slopes at elevations that range between 350 and 1,000 meters. The grapes are sun dried to further concentrate the juice and then pressed with oil presses separated by esparto grass mats, like it was done in the past. They tell me they need 2.5 kilos of grapes to obtain one liter of juice. Fermentation is long and happens in 225-liter oak barrels, where the wine matures at low temperature for 20 months. This feels sooooo young and tender, undeveloped and reticent compared with the 2013 and 2014 I tasted next to it. These wines need at least five years to start showing their true colors. It's faintly minty, not really grapey, but balsamic, with faint notes of bitter orange marmalade. The one thing I also like is that this wine is never overwhelmingly sweet and feels fresher. It's hard to guess what's going to happen with this wine in a few years, but I think it will evolve beautifully. It fermented in open-top oak vats with indigenous yeasts and matured in 1,500-liter oak foudres for 14 to 16 months following the most strict tradition. The wine is superb, subtle, elegant and refined, still a little young and closed but with a sense of harmony, depth and seriousness that puts it among the finest vintages for this wine. The palate is lively and vibrant, with purity and harmony; it's delineated, symmetric and seamless, with a silky palate. It's a traditional blend of Tempranillo with approximately 15% other grapes—Valenciano (Bobal), Navarro (Garnacha) and white Albillo—from different soils in five different villages, Sotillo de la Ribera, Roa, Fuentecén, Fuentemolinos and Pardilla. It fermented in oak and stainless steel vats with indigenous yeasts and matured for 14 months in French oak barrels of different ages. 2016 was also an abundant crop of wines with freshness. It's a traditional red with elegant rusticity and subtle aromas, already gaining some tertiary notes, integrated oak and a medium to full-bodied palate with fine-grained tannins, fine but still identifiable as Ribera del Duero. They have the idea to renovate an old house to make the winery, but they are facing bureaucratic problems... 22,665 bottles produced. It was bottled in May and June 2018.
